NYC: Day One

We arrived in NYC early afternoon on Friday.  After a MAJOR traffic jam and a shady cab driver, we made it to our hotel:  The Muse.  This was a really modern, very hip hotel literally a block from Times Square.  It was a great place to stay for our first visit to New York City!

After we got in our room and took a few minutes to get settled in, we decided we needed to explore.  So, Jonathan had the great idea that we should walk through Times Square and head toward Central Park.  Folks, this is no small feat.  I don't remember the exact number, but I believe Central Park is at least 15 blocks from Times Square.  The journey there didn't seem to take so long because, literally, I think we were in shock from just being in the midst of all the chaos.  We would stop, browse, stare, window shop, stop, stare.  It took us a while to get there, but we managed.  Then, we had to journey ALLLLL the way back.  I was ready for a nap by that point, but my tummy was growling and I was ready to eat.

Here are some of the pictures I took as we mosied our way to Central Park.

We decided to try out an Italian restaurant we had discovered during our trek around town.  It's called Patsy's, and actually Amy (Jonathan's sister) had mentioned it to us and said the food was great.  We journeyed the 8 or so blocks and once we were inside we came to two conclusions:  (A) We were very underdressed.  (B) We were very young.  We shyly walked up to the hostess and asked for a table for two.  She patronizingly smiled at us and asked, "Do you have a reservation?"  "hehheee....Um, no... hehhteehee."  (Should we have?  Obviously!)  We were seated immediately upstairs where I assume we would save them from embarassment ;)

Anyway, the food and the service was divine!  I had the Shrimp Marina and Jonathan had a Stuffed Veal Marsala.  We really enjoyed the meal, especially because it was the first sit-down meal we had had in a while where it was just the two of us.  We had some great conversation!

After supper, Jonathan got the brilliant idea that we should walk to the Empire State Building and go up to the top.  "Right now!?" I asked.  Very tired and very full.  "Yeah, right now!"  So, off we went, walking another 100 blocks or so in the opposite direction toward the Empire State Building.  This ended up being a wonderful idea.  By the time we made it there, it was around 10:30 pm, and while there were lots of tourists, the lines were not very bad at all.  Jonathan said he had read that the lines can be ridiculous during the day, and he also read a suggestion about seeing the view from the top of the ESB at night, a clear night, because you are able to see the entire cityscape lit up from such a spectacular viewpoint.  It was marvelous!  Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get many pictures from up top.  I was having camera issues and really needed a tripod being that high up.  But, I didn't have a tripod with me in NYC, and they didn't even allow tripods up at the top of the Empire State Building because apparently tripods are extremely hazardous.  (ahem).

Can't you tell how tired we were?

Lit up at night.

Outside on the 86th floor look out.

I must announce that Jonathan and I are officially members of the 102nd club. We went all the way to the 102nd floor of the ESB and got to look out from that point.

A shot I somehow managed to get. BEAUTIFUL!

I don't remember much else from that night because I think I went into a coma from exhaustion somewhere in the middle of the walk back to our hotel.  I just remember asking Jonathan if he happened to have a saw in his suitcase because I wanted to saw off my legs because they hurt so badly from all of the walking.

This was only the first 12 hours people.

Thankfully, I woke up completely refreshed and extremely pumped about the rest of our trip, and even though we walked TONS, I think my body just adjusted gradually to the rigidity and momentum of going, going, going.

Day Two and more....to come!

Walking was one of my favorite things about NYC. I LOVE it and can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!
