So, tonight we were just about to put Nora to bed. We said our prayers, and Jonathan asked Nora for a kiss. As he so often does, he asked Nora if she wanted to rub his whiskers. (Yes, my studly husband has a beard these days for those of you who haven't seen him in a while). Nora, of course, was happy to oblige her daddy and rubbed his beard. She then looked at me and said, "blah, blah, blah, Mommy whiskers?" and proceeded to rub my face just like she does Jonathan's.
Um, hello, do I LOOK like I have whiskers? Jonathan thought that was hysterical while I tried to explain to Nora that Mommy doesn't have a beard. Only Daddy does. Right? Are you not telling me something?
Thought it was cute. Thought I'd share.
Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain; unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. Psalm 127:1

What's New with Nora
Whew, this week has been wild!
First of all, my parents were supposed to be in town this week to visit us during Mardi Gras. However, after a violent stomach virus foiled their plans, our week was looking pretty low key because Grandpa and Nana weren't able to come visit after all. Although I was pretty disappointed about not being able to see them, I was thankful that we were not subjected to the ferocious vomiting that my folks had to endure.
On Tuesday, Nora woke up from her afternoon nap with a low-grade fever, which by midnight elevated to 103 degrees. My poor baby was not feeling well at all, but other than not having an appetite and her fever, she didn't really have any other symptoms. Wednesday we just layed low, my main objective being to get her to eat or drink as much as possible. We were finally fever free yesterday, however, her appetite wasn't back to normal even though she tried to eat. She threw up in her high chair and in the car on the way to my doctor appointment. I can still smell "the smell" of the curdled milk everywhere. I can't stand it. How does throw up manage to find every crack and crevice hidden to the human eye? Anyway, by yesterday afternoon, my little sweet personality was back and she's finally feeling much better!
This morning, we had Nora's 18 month check-up, which worked out perfectly! The doctor was able to check her throat and ears just to be sure they weren't part of this virus we had, but "everything looked beautiful."
Can I just say, Nora is total drama at the doctor's office. I think she even has a reputation. From the moment the nurse takes us back, she starts crying. She's wailing through the measuring and weighing. She wailed when the drew her blood (which I would expect). I finally calmed her down when Dr. G walked in. Just the sight of him causes her to start crying. I know he's probably used to it, but I feel bad for the guy. She has a bandaid on her finger where they pricked her, and you would think it's a purple heart. She holds it up away from everything so it doesn't get touched. Plus, she has to show it to everyone for sympathy. Seriously, the drama at the doctor is over the top!
Enough about that! Here are Nora's 18-month stats. She weighs 21 lbs., 9 oz. (15-20th percentile) and is 31 3/4 inches long (55th percentile). I asked about the fact that Nora is still not walking. Dr. G was very reassuring that all is okay and that we don't need to worry. What is important is that she is progressing...which she is! Since her 15-month check-up she's come really far and is very interested in walking, just not without the comfort of holding someone's fingers. Dr. G said it's just a matter of confidence. The more she practices, the more confident she gets, and one day it'll just happen. That's exactly what I thought he would tell me, but I had to ask just to be sure. However, I do hope Nora has a breakthrough before May 6th. Yeah, that would be nice. But, no pressure, baby, no pressure.
There you have it folks. Our week in review. Little Nora is feeling much better. Having had even these past few days of sickness makes me so appreciative of how healthy our little girl has been in the past. Generally, we have been blessed to avoid ear problems, major stomach issues, etc. God is so faithful to sustain in times when our little ones are ill, and he gives us the strength and patience to care for them.

Banana Nut Bliss
Every now and then, say every other month or so, I get the hankering for some banana nut bread. Baking makes me feel so Martha Stewart. So Betty Crocker. So domestic. I do it so rarely, and I truly don't do it very well at all. However, for whatever reason, banana nut bread calls my name occasionally, and I just HAVE to make some. My most recent hankering came upon me this afternoon. Maybe it is the hormones, maybe it's the lack of sleep lately. But, I'm pretty sure it was the stack of brown bananas on my fruit platter that just screamed BAKE ME!
A few hours later and my house smells like freshly baked goodness. I even broke out of my shell a little bit and made banana nut muffins instead of the typical banana nut bread. Can't wait till breakfast! Anyway, I thought I would post the recipe I use in case any of you out there love banana nut bread like I do. The best part about this recipe is that when this craving occurs so randomly, I almost always have all of the ingredients in my pantry/refrigerator.
Banana Nut Bread
1 stick of butter, at room temperature
1 cup of sugar
2 eggs
3-4 bananas, preferably ripe
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda (sifted in flour)
1 cup nuts (optional) (I use chopped pecans)
1 cup raisins (optional)
1/2 Tablespoon vanilla
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time. Then add the bananas, sifted flour and baking soda; mix well. Add nuts, raisins, and vanilla. Pour into a greased loaf pan (or greased/lined muffin pans) and bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
***For the muffins, I took them out after 30 minutes. I usually bake the loaf for 40-50 minutes, or until the middle is done. Also, I ended up with approximately 20 muffins with just one batch. I know this recipe can be easily doubled to make multiple loaves or to freeze some.

28 Weeks Update

Hello! Not too much to say, but I thought I would document my 28 week appointment anyway. I just looked at the little baby due date ticker on my blog homepage, and I am blown away that we have 79 days left until this little baby is due. Crazy! And yes, this baby is approximately the size of an eggplant for those who like a visual aid. Just wait until you see what he'll be the size of by the end of next month!
Anyway, I had a doctor's appt. this past Friday for my 28 week checkup. Everything is going well. I had to have a blood test done and received a shot of Rhogam since I am Rh-. We got to hear his heartbeat which was around 150 bpm, and my belly is measuring right on target, so growth is progressing just great! I now have appointments every two weeks, which is such a big milestone it seems like. We really are getting close!
I am a slacker when it comes to pregnancy pics, but I really should try to get a few taken before this is all over. I'll try to get some to post in the near future for those friends and family out of town. Till next time!

For Valentine's Day: 14 Things I Love About My Husband
**This is a day late! However, every word is true.
1. I love that he is truly a kid at heart. There is a five-year-old running around inside of him that comes out sometimes.
2. I love that he is different than me in so many ways, but that at the same time we have so much in common and enjoy the same things.
3. I love that he has the ability to confront me in my sin in a loving and caring and encouraging way when I am wrong. I don't always LIKE that he does this, but I know what a gift it is that he leads me in this way and that he does it because he loves me.
4. I love that he loves being a daddy and is so excited to grow our family together.
5. I love that he loves to read....fiction, nonfiction, theological stuff.
6. I love that he just HAS to go check on Nora at night before we go to bed to make sure she's "okay." I also love that when he gets back in bed after checking on her that he has to tell me exactly how she looked in her sleep. He loves his little girl!
7. I love that he loves his family. He is such a caring son and brother to his parents and sister. He is committed to serving them and keeping up with them consistently.
8. I love that he loves my family. He genuinely enjoys being around them and hanging out with them, and I have never felt that my family is second-rate in his opinion.
9. I love that he knows all of my faults and still loves me passionately.
10. I love that he tries all the time to embarrass me. He typically succeeds.
11. I love that he is such a hard worker and that he has a Godly desire to do well in all he does for the glory of God.
12. I love that he loves what he does for a living. I am totally aware that there are so many people who go to work and do what they do without enjoyment. My husband lives his life knowing that God has called him to his occupation, and he truly loves his career! Praise to the Lord!
13. I love that he has taught me to love so many new things in life. There are things that I would never have imagined myself interested in, but thanks to his desire and passion for things, I have grown to love them as he does.
14. I love that he loves the Lord more than he loves me. I love that every year I have known him has been one of growth in God, by the grace of God! I look forward to seeing this attribute about him flourish the most.

Snicker Brownies
Ingredients:
1 box of German Chocolate cake mix
1 1/2 sticks of margarine, melted
1 can of sweetened, condensed milk
1 bag of Snickers fun size candy bars
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine cake mix, melted margarine, and condensed milk. Spread half of the cake mixture in the bottom of a lightly greased 9x13 pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Slice candy bars into small slices and layer the slices onto the baked crust. Crumble the remaining batter on top of the candy slices. It will have a crumbly texture, so don't worry about making it smooth. Put pan back into oven and bake for 20 minutes more at 350 degrees.
These brownies are delicious! The best part, honestly, may be in making them. Since they don't have raw eggs in the batter, I was free to sample as much of the batter as I felt was required. This is a super simple recipe with amazing results!
A few tips:
*** I bought a large bag of fun size Snicker bars because I knew going in I was making two batches of the brownies. I ended up slicing up about 10 fun size Snickers for each batch, so that may help you gauge. The great news: I think I can get about 3 batches of Snickers brownies out of the big bag if I use that number.
*** This recipe would probably be equally as scrumptious with Milky Way! Honestly, there are endless possibilities.
*** I also think after much serious thought and meditation and sampling, that these brownies would actually make great cookies! I think I may try this. Make the batter, slice up some Snickers, drop by the spoonful. Yummy!

Adventures in Photography: I Have No Idea What I'm Doing
I don't believe I've mentioned that I am taking a photography class at UT this winter. It's an eight week course focusing on the fundamentals of digital photography, specifically using DSLR cameras. I am having a great time learning how to take manual photos and all of the ins and outs of this camera. Before this class, I don't think I had ever moved my switch off of the green square or "Auto" mode.
Taking all of these pictures has led me to Photoshop, a photo editing/enhancing program that I had heard about but never used before. I am teaching myself how to use this awesome program by reading a how-to book by Photoshop wiz, Scott Kelby. It's really interesting, but I'm having trouble finding time to sit down and teach myself. It's a very time-consuming endeavor because you can do TONS in this program (not to mention the book seems to be the size of a phonebook!). However, because I didn't have a homework assignment due for class this week, I have managed to squeeze some time in and have just scratched the surface of what Photoshop is really all about.
Let me state: I have no idea what I am doing.
However, I was just playing with some stuff and this is what I did! Nora and I ventured out for a walk/trip to the playground this morning and I captured a few shots.

Pregnancy Brain
Okay, so I'm sure for anyone who's been pregnant, you know what this post is referring to. For the past several weeks, my pregnancy brain has TOTALLY kicked in. I am a total space cadet! I had this same experience with my pregnancy for Nora where I had trouble communicating coherent thoughts at times, forgetting everything, starting to do one thing only to forget and move on to something else, inverting words, etc. This time, I am truly thankful that the Lord is protecting me. Seriously, there was one week a while back where I could have burnt the house down like three times. Leaving burners on, leaving candles lit, etc. Not good.
Two prime examples come to mind to sum this up. About two weeks ago, I made a huge pot of taco soup. I'm talking BIG.POT.OF.SOUP. I was really excited to use a new dutch oven I received for Christmas. So, I make the yummy soup, we eat a serving each for supper, and there is plenty for leftovers for a couple of meals. I decided to leave the large dutch oven on the stovetop to cool for a couple of hours so I could then just put the pot into the refrigerator. Well, at 7:15 the NEXT morning, I awoke suddenly from my slumber with the dreaded thought that I had LEFT THE MONSTROUS POT OF SOUP ON THE STOVE all night long. Bye, bye soup! I was so frustrated with myself. Granted, I have the potential to do this any day of the year, whether pregnant or not, but I seriously think the hormones were contributing on this one.
Finally, my dreams have been so weird for the past couple of weeks. I have heard about pregnancy dreams and all of these crazy things you dream about in anticipation of the baby's arrival. Yeah, had one of those last night! I gave birth to my baby in my dream last night, except that this baby was no ordinary child. It was a minnow. Yes, a baby FISH! Where in the world did this come from, I wonder? The dream went on for hours it feels like and neither me nor anyone else in the dream seemed weirded out by the fact that I birthed another species. The other thing was that I kept dropping the minnow. It was so small, so tiny that I just couldn't keep up with it. At one point, I lost it and was trying to find another one to carry around so no one would realize I had lost my child. I'm still confused and a little scared of myself.
Anyway, I hope you can relate to some of these or atleast get a good laugh at my craziness these days. I love being pregnant, but there are some weird effects! P.S. I'll be 28 weeks on Wednesday. Dr. appt. is this Friday, so I'll post updates afterward.

For Valentine's Day: 14 Things I Love About My Nora
1. I love that Nora looks so much like her Daddy, even if that means she doesn't look like me.
2. I love how Nora is such a talker. I mean, the girl has a mouth!
3. I love that Nora scoots.
4. I love the way Nora says certain words like "beyo" for bear and "mok" for milk.
5. I love that when Nora gets really tickled, she ends her laughing spells with "OOH, Mommy!"
6. I love that life since Nora has completely changed our lives for the better. What did we do before her? What did we talk about?
7. I love how Nora loves to talk on the phone and is fully capable of carrying on a "conversation."
8. I love how Nora reads books aloud all the time. I have no idea what the books are about, but I'm convinced they're bestsellers.
9. I love that Nora has her "happy place." When she's tired, upset, relaxing, or trying to go to sleep, she puts her right hand up by her head. It's the sweetest thing.
10. I love that Nora is super girlie. She loves purses, makeup, shoes, clothes.
11. I love that Nora loves her baby brother before he's even here. She kisses him and pets him and says "Baby" so sweetly.
12. I love that having Nora means I always have someone to spend the day with. We have so much fun and have such a special bond as Mommy and Daughter.
13. I love that Nora loves to hold my hand. Without fail, every time we are in the car she asks to hold my hands. Unfortunately, if I'm driving, I have to turn her down for safety's sake.
14. I love that Nora has been such a source of growth, challenge, and change in my life. The Lord has definitely used her in my life!
Happy Valentine's Day, Nora Kathryn! We sure do love you.

Swing Time
Before all of this snow made its way into Knoxville yesterday, we had a special treat. Sunday was GORGEOUS! The weather made it into the high 50s, low 60s which hasn't happened in months! So, Nora and I bundled up and headed to the park after naptime to play on the swings. She was in heaven! This girl sure does love to play outside.

Question
I know this question will seem really random since it's the beginning of February and everyone is staying in so much due to the snow. However, to my Knoxville moms out there:
I am wanting to sign Nora up for swim lessons for this summer. I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions about people or places that have come (highly) recommended. I know some people give lessons out of their homes and then there are always places like the YMCA. Just hoping for some feedback.
Thanks!

Snow Days
Well, it's happened! Knoxville is officially in the midst of a winter weather advisory and almost everything is completely covered in snow. It is beautiful and is something this deep South, Louisiana girl has never experienced before. I think the amount of snow has really taken everyone by surprise. "Major" snow like this is kind of like "Major" hurricanes in Louisiana. You believe it will hit when you actually see it; from what I gather, most people from this area are skeptics about snow because we just don't get it that often. But not this week!
Yesterday is when the fun began. Nora and I got caught up in the big snowfall as we were out getting groceries. We made it home with no problems, and we got to enjoy watching it fall for about 5 hours or so. Jonathan got off work early which made me really excited, and we enjoyed a quiet and peaceful evening at home praying we woke up in the morning with electricity. Too bad he's back at work today, but thankfully the whole city hasn't shut down and the roads are pretty decent. We are expected to get some more snow tonight and the winter advisory isn't over until tomorrow afternoon.
Here are some pictures that Jonathan and I took throughout the day yesterday and a few that I shot this morning. Poor Nora has only been able to view the snow from the windows. Being that our girl is not yet a walker, I just don't feel too right about getting her out there in the snow to scoot around and get soaked! It's like 19 degrees out there with the windchill. Maybe we'll get some more next year and she can play in it then. (Shout out: Lord, please let her be walking by then! Amen.)
To all my Louisianans out there...I hope you're jealous!
